Rapport sur la marche et les effets du choléra-morbus dans Paris et les communes rurales du département de la Seine. First edition of this influential government report on the 1832 Paris cholera epidemic, in which data collated by agents of the July Monarchy links hygiene to population density. It was innovative for both its large-scale information gathering and use of early infographics. The epidemic killed over 18,000 Parisians and led to the June Rebellion, after which the government instigated this report. Many modern precautions, such as wider streets and covered sewers, were implemented on account of its findings. "Under the auspices of state institutions, however, the human sciences transformed the individual into an object of investigation that ultimately served to express and address government concerns about the problems, and not the potentials, of human freedom" (Delaporte, p. 7). An abbreviated English translation appeared in 1849.
