This set features a striking Art Nouveau "Tree of Life" motif stamped in gold on the front covers, designed by the notable Edwardian illustrator Garth Jones. The spines feature intricate, interlocking gilt accents with the "Simpkin" distributor imprint at the tail. The internal pages are printed on delicate, high-quality thin paper with decorative title borders by Garth Jones and stylised frontispiece portraits by Reginald Savage (Vol. 1, Spenser) and Edmund J. Sullivan (Vol. 2, Queen Elizabeth I). Unique Binder's Error / Printing Anomaly: This particular set features an unusual quirk for bibliophiles and curiosity collectors. While Vol. 1 bears the standard Simpkin, Marshall title page for this shared-sheet distribution run, Volume 2 accidentally features both title pages bound sequentially into the front of the book: first the Simpkin /Newnes distribution imprint page followed by the George Newnes title page.
