"Delo" (The Cause) was a prominent monthly "thick journal" (scientific, literary, and political magazine) published in Saint Petersburg from 1866 to 1888. It served as a primary platform for the revolutionary-democratic intelligentsia and radical thinkers of the era. The magazine combined serialized fiction and literary criticism with serious essays on natural sciences, economics, and sociology. The Survivor of Censorship: "Delo" was created right after the tsarist government banned the most famous radical magazines of the time ("Sovremennik" and "Russkoe Slovo"). For about a year and a half, it remained the only legal outlet for radical democratic thought in the entire Russian Empire. A Tiny but Impactful Audience: In 1868 the magazine's circulation was only around 1,500 copies per month.
