The author (1845-1932) was a missionary sinologist resident for 54 years in China, including in Tianjin and Tongzhou. The half-title has the ownership signature of Robert Alexander Currie, an employee of the Chinese Maritime Customs Service from 1886 to 1925. He retired at the senior rank of commissioner.
