Anti-Chinese Riots at Seattle, WN., February 8th, 1886. First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the title page verso, "A. W. Earl. Compliments of Geo. Kinnear." The author was a captain in Seattle's Home Guard, the militia organization formed to protect Chinese residents and property from the rioters.Fuelled by racism and the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act, the 1886 riots forced the majority of the city's 1,000-strong Chinese population to flee. On the occasion of the 25th anniversary, Kinnear published this account to "correct some erroneous statements which have been made by different persons, several having found their way into books considered reliable authority" (p. 3) and as a clarion call to uphold the rule of law.The recipient, Austin Wilbur Earl (1870-1935), moved to Seattle in the early 20th century.
