Original July 5, 1879 inaugural issue of PUBLIC HEALTH, a weekly journal devoted to the preservation of health. Vol. 1, No. 1 — Whole No. 1. Edited by Edward J. Bermingham, A.M., M.D., New York. This is the very first issue of this 19th-century public health publication and features an elaborate illustrated masthead along with articles discussing sanitation, disease prevention, water quality, public laundries, health and exercise, house cisterns and other public-health concerns of the period. Also contains a fascinating full page of original 1879 advertisements, including mineral and spring waters, disinfectants, Russian vapor baths, builders and engineers, wines, brandies, Holland gin, Jamaica rum, Champagne Lager Beer and other period businesses and products. A particularly interesting piece of early American medical, sanitation, public-health and New York history. Condition: Original antique condition with substantial age toning, staining/foxing, wrinkling, edge wear and general handling wear as shown.
