Early full calf with a contrasting title-label on the spine; spine and edges of the boards tooled in gilt; covers a little worn at the extremities, with minor surface loss to the spine; pencilled annotation to the half-title and one small pencilled manicule; scattered light foxing and a few of trifling signs of age and handling; a very good copy. The 'Octavius' is an early Christian apologia, and the only known work of Marcus Minucius Felix (died circa 250 AD). It takes the form of a dialogue between pagan Caecilius Natalis and a Christian, Octavius Januarius. Provenance: William Grant, Lord Prestongrange (1701-1764), Lord Advocate of Scotland, with his armorial bookplate on the front pastedown. An ink annotation notes that he features in Robert Louis Stevenson's 'Catriona'. The later pictorial bookplate of 'H.C. Marr, M.D.' is mounted on the front free endpaper.
