NEL GHETTO — poems by Ivan Teobaldelli with drawings by Massimo Quinto. Published February 1978 by Edizioni Ottaviano, Milan. Original price L. 2.200. ITALIAN GAY LIBERATION PUBLISHING AT ITS SOURCE. Milan in 1978 was the centre of a small, politically engaged Italian publishing scene that produced very little and exported almost none of it. Ottaviano was a left-wing house of the period; this is a book of poetry about homosexual life issued at a moment when that was still an act with consequences. THE DESIGN MAKES THE ARGUMENT. Quinto’s drawings put public lavatories and urinals on the cover and title page — the geography of clandestine gay life, rendered plainly and without apology. The book is about confinement, and it looks like it. RARE OUTSIDE ITALY. Material of this kind reached the United States in tiny numbers, if at all, and survives here in fewer. For collections of international gay liberation-era printing, Italian material is among the hardest to source. Ships bagged and boarded in a rigid mailer. International buyers welcome, and shipping to Italy is quoted on request.
