The Outsider. First edition in English, first impression, of the author's first novel, which helped define the literature of alienation and the absurd in the post-war world. Translated from Camus's L'Étranger (1942), this English version was made by Stuart Gilbert, a British scholar who was a friend of James Joyce. It also includes an introduction by Cyril Connolly.This London edition was published in January 1946 and precedes the New York edition, published by Knopf in April as The Stranger.
