Journal of a Voyage to Peru: First edition, association copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title, "Michael Faraday Esquire, With the author's best compliments". Faraday analysed water samples brought back from Peru by Brand; his reports on these are included as Appendix VI. Brand (1797-1872) was a lieutenant in the Navy who also made expeditions to Africa. A distinguished and popular officer, "he was presented by the ship's company [of the HMS Cygnet (1840)] with an elegant sword 'in testimony of their regard and esteem of his gentlemanly conduct' while on board" (O'Byrne). This book "contains much information on both Chile and Argentina, in addition to Peru. He also visited Rio de Janeiro, Montevideo, and crossed the Banda Oriental (Uruguay) to Buenos Aires. From Valparaiso, Chile, he sailed on the Orion to Callao and Lima. On his return trip aboard the Volador, he visited the Juan Fernandez Islands" (Hill). "The purpose of Brand's journey, 'comprising upwards of twenty thousand miles by sea and land' within a single year, is unknown... Brand's evasiveness led his biographer J. John Brand to believe that this was probably not a 'purely private' venture, but rather a clandestine official mission" (Knox).This copy also has the ownership signature on the front free endpaper verso of Frances Barnard, perhaps Frances née Proctor (1834-1869).
