This book, the author's principle early work, describes the cities, arts, foods, and military organisation of the different areas of Italy, adding to these anecdotes of his journey. We trace no other copies with coloured frontispieces.Czoernig (1804-1889) was born in Trieste, and lived through the waves of pro-Italian sentiment in the region during the 19th century. He played an important role in the expansion of steam power on the Danube and was one of the first to recognise the value of statistics in the running of railways, the result of which was the Railway Concession Act ("Eisenbahnkonssesionsgesetz") of 1854.
