When it was first published, in 1918, Strachey shot to the top rank of biographers; the book’s fame rests on the irreverence and wit Strachey brought to bear on three men and a woman who had until then been regarded as heroes: Cardinal Manning (Archbishop of Westminster), Rugby Headmaster Thomas Arnold, General Gordon (aka ‘Chinese Gordon’) and Florence Nightingale. Nightingale is praised and her reputation enhanced, but Manning, Arnold and Gordon are shown in a less than flattering light.
