P.O. Frisco, Volume 1, Number 1, dated September 2, 1966. This exceptionally scarce San Francisco underground newspaper was the first and only issue of P.O. Frisco and represents an important precursor to the legendary San Francisco Oracle. P.O. Frisco emerged from San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury counterculture during the summer of 1966. Allen Cohen, who would soon become co-founder and editor of the San Francisco Oracle, worked with Ron and Jay Thelin of the influential Psychedelic Shop to produce the paper. Following this single issue, Cohen and others would go on to develop the San Francisco Oracle, which became one of the defining publications of the psychedelic era. The front page features the headline “Viet GI Speaks Out,” presenting the experiences of Vietnam veteran Moe Armstrong. Other prominent content includes Richard Alpert, Ron Boise, the Port Chicago Report, and the provocative headline “Concentration Camps Ready for Subversives.” Across its 12 pages, the newspaper contains underground journalism, political and social commentary, poetry, experimental theater and film coverage, advertisements, and extensive San Francisco cultural listings. References include the Fillmore Auditorium, Avalon Ballroom, Beatles, Haight-Ashbury and numerous figures and institutions associated with the rapidly developing Bay Area counterculture.
