Original artwork for Happy and Glorious: "The Popular Voice". Published in Laurence Housman's Happy and Glorious (1943) on page 224. The drawing accompanies "The Popular Voice" in which Lord Aberdeen, informs Queen Victoria "when [Prince Albert] rides in the Park, he has not been treated with proper respect... In public life one has to face unpopularity at times. I might say it is part of one's duty when political feeling runs riot..."Happy and Glorious collected Housman's series of plays previously published in Victoria Regina, The Golden Sovereign, and Gracious Majesty. The plays depicted Queen Victoria on the stage and therefore were generally unlicensed by the Lord Chamberlain. Although Shepard had previously provided illustrations for these plays, Happy and Glorious included a number of drawings hitherto unpublished, as here.
