The book is dedicated to Bagnold's parents.During his military career, Arthur Henry Bagnold (1854-1943) saw service in Cyprus, South Africa, and Egypt, and participated in the 1884-5 Nile expedition to rescue General Gordon in Khartoum, Sudan. He was also an amateur historian. The Bagnold family moved to Warren Wood in 1903.This children's novel follows the adventures of the three titular siblings in a seaside village on the Sussex coast. It includes illustrations by Bagnold's nine-year-old daughter, Laurian.
