Larkin (Philip) Bridge for the Living, "souvenir programme", signed by Charles Monteith's on title, a few light spots to covers, [Bloomfield B22], Hull, 1981 Stoppard (Tom) Is It True What They Say About Shakespeare? Oxford, 1982, original wrappers, 8vo (2) *** The first mentioned contains the first appearance in print of Larkin's poem 'Bridge for the Living'. Charles Monteith (1921-1995), editor at Faber and responsible for publishing writers such as William Golding, Samuel Beckett, Ted Hughes and Philip Larkin. In the late 1970s Larkin wrote to Monteith regarding the poem's copyright and the possibility of having it set to music for the opening of the Humber Bridge. The poem was eventually set to music by Anthony Hedges.
