Some have said the first half of the book, which details her childhood, was idyllic but I don't agree with that assessment at all. Two attempted rapes, dealing with her troubled, unfaithful mother, desperate poverty. It's sometimes heavy stuff, mixed with Joan's wonderful sense of humor. The second half of the book which brings her quickly to Hollywood success, details three marriages and one comes to suspect that setting the record straight, especially where Jim (Dick Powell?) and Amy (June Allyson?) are concerned, was a major impetus for writing the book. It's juicy stuff if you know who the players are. The book ends very abruptly, Nora/Joan's marriage to Jeff (Mike Todd) taking up only 4 pages yet hinting at so much darkness. It's a bit jarring and the reason for my missing 5th star. Reading between the lines it seems that Joan just wanted to let the world know her truth about Dick and June, say some choice things about June (and Marion Davies,) and then wrap up the book as quickly as possible. The book was written 22 years after her marriage to Mike Todd ended so certainly there
