Sierra Domino built its catalogue around Black male models at a time when almost nobody else in the field was doing it, and Nightstars is the house retrospective — a collection of the men who had earned repeat sessions, not just with SD but with outside photographers as well. The editorial on page three is the reason this issue matters. It names the four photographers whose work fills the book as a small fraternity documenting Black men on film, and states outright that mainstream media and physique photographers alike had ignored these subjects. That is a publisher putting its editorial position on the record in 1985, in print, in its own magazine. Material of this kind is thin on the ground. The major physique houses of the fifties through the eighties photographed Black models rarely and often segregated them into special issues. A San Francisco imprint building its entire identity around this work is the exception, and institutional collections of Black gay visual history have far fewer of these than they would like. Condition: good vintage — edge and corner wear, creasing and chipping along the spine edge, old retailer price label to the front cover. Interior sound and complete.
