Black armband worn following Mao's death. Lettered with the date of Mao's death, 9 September 1976, this armband was made for one of the hundreds of thousands of public memorial events staged in the wake of the chairman's passing. Attendance was compulsory and performative tears well-advised. The main text reads, "The memory of our Great Leader and Great Teacher Chairman Mao will endure forever."In late 1976, work began on the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall, which now dominates the southern half of Tiananmen Square.
