Published by The Michie Company, Printers, Charlottesville, Virginia, 1939. Copyright 1939 by Betty Elise Davis. Softcover booklet with illustrated cover showing a young boy and girl in period dress beneath a sketch of Monticello. This copy is signed by the author in blue ink on the title page (“Betty Elise Davis”). It includes a printed facsimile of a warm letter from Eleanor Roosevelt on White House stationery, dated February 2, 1939, addressed to “My dear Miss Davis.” In the letter, Mrs. Roosevelt praises Thomas Jefferson’s inquiring mind and encourages the young reader to keep an open mind so life remains interesting. The letter is signed in facsimile “Eleanor Roosevelt.” A delightful collection of short, historically grounded stories about Jefferson’s children and grandchildren, written for young readers with the stated aim of making the past “more alive.” The author notes that while the events are authentic, some dialogue and reactions have been imagined.
