Pride and Prejudice. First deluxe Brock edition, in the publisher's vellum. Charles Brock and his brother Henry were the first to illustrate Austen's world with colour plates, producing an edition together in 1898. Almost a decade later, Dent commissioned Charles alone to produce fresh illustrations for their "Series of English Idylls", which introduced this deluxe vellum format.The Brocks prided themselves on the historical accuracy of their illustrations. They collected antique furniture and had their friends model clothing from the period in their Cambridge studio. Charles Brock (1870-1938) was elected a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour in 1908.Pride and Prejudice was first published in 1813.
