This 1914 Charles Scribner’s Sons hardcover contains a handwritten presentation inscription addressed to Count Eugène Goblet d’Alviella, the prominent Belgian senator and Minister of State. The inscription reads, “To Count Goblet d’Alviella in memory of the days in ‘The City of Gloom’ With the best wishes of The Author. New York 17 Dec. 1914.” “The City of Gloom” is the title of Chapter II, while Powell personally names Count d’Alviella in Chapter VII during his account of Winston Churchill’s arrival in Antwerp. The copyright page states “Published December, 1914,” placing the inscription in the book’s publication month and creating a direct connection between its author, recipient and subject matter. The handwriting has not been independently authenticated, and the inscription is signed “The Author” rather than with Powell’s written name. It is therefore described as a presentation association inscription attributed to E. Alexander Powell. The book is illustrated with photographs credited to Donald Thompson.
