His Last Bow. First edition of this anthology of eight Sherlock Holmes stories published in The Strand Magazine and Collier's between 1893 and 1917.The preface, by "John H. Watson, M.D.", reveals that Holmes has long retired from his profession of detective, but is alive and well, living in a small farm five miles from Eastbourne. However, "the approach of the war with Germany caused him to lay his remarkable combination of intellectual and practical activity at the disposal of the Government" (p. v).The stories are: The Adventure of Wisteria Lodge (1908), The Adventure of the Cardboard Box (1893), The Adventure of the Red Circle (1911), The Adventure of the Bruce-Partington Plans (1908), The Adventure of the Dying Detective (1913), The Disappearance of Lady Frances Carfax (1911), The Adventure of the Devil's Foot (1910), and His Last Bow (1917).
