An exceptionally fine example of Hoppé's first publication, with early representations of Ballets Russes' celebrities such as Tamara Karsavina and Nijinsky. Emil Otto Hoppe was born in Munich in 1878 and first established his London photographic studio in 1907 where he became in 1910 the founding member of the London Salon of Photography. He was introduced to Sergei Diaghilev and became a 'house photographer' for his troupe, capturing their biggest stars during their London seasons. The ballets represented here are: L'Oiseau de Feu, Thamar, Le Spectre de la Rose, Le Pavillon D'Armide, Le Carnaval, Prince Igor, Cleopatra and Sheherazade. Folio (38 x 27 cm); title and 15 mounted black-and-white photogravure plates by Hoppe, tipped on paper; loose as issued in the original brown card portfolio, table of contents pasted inside front cover, title in gilt and blindstamped, very minor wear to spine, else a fine copy.
