Condition: Pre-owned very good vintage hardcover with age related wear and owner name Vintage revised and enlarged edition of Masonry Defined: A Liberal Masonic Education, compiled from the writings of Dr. Albert G. Mackey and many other eminent Masonic authorities and revised and enlarged by E. R. Johnston. Published by National Masonic Press, Inc., this substantial reference was designed as an educational handbook for Freemasons and presents Masonic history, symbolism, philosophy, customs, terminology, ritual traditions and organizational practices in an extensive question and answer format. The title page identifies E. R. Johnston as a 32 degree Mason and originator of the Questionnaire System of Masonic Education. The copyright information states that the questions were copyrighted January 11, 1930 by E. R. Johnston and that the appendix and dictionary were copyrighted in 1939 by the estate of E. R. Johnston. This corresponds to the revised and enlarged version of the work. The book has an especially attractive dark brown textured hardcover with ornate embossed decoration and extensive gilt detailing. The front cover features Masonic Square and Compasses symbols, a large gold oval reading Masonry Defined, the phrase A Liberal Masonic Education Easily Obtained, an illuminated torch design and the Johnston name. The spine is similarly decorated and reads Masonry Defined, Revised and Enlarged and National Masonic Press Inc. All three page edges are gilt, adding considerably
