Near complete set of the Viking/Penguin Modern Masters Series, initially published by Viking in the early 70s and later continued by Penguin Books after they acquired Viking Press. Highly acclaimed critical series covering intellectual, political and artistic giants of the 19th and 20th centuries, covering both their work and lives. All titles are US trade paperbacks (many, if not most, were simultaneously released in paperback and hardcover editions), as issued. Minor wear, no markings or underlining (except one title with owner’s name in front-see below). Overall, in excellent condition. Printings are listed for individual titles; unless noted below, all are presumed first trade paperback editions/printings. Some page darkening of the Penguin editions (as with many Penguin paperbacks, the paper stock has darkened with age).
