The tales were previously published in journals and comprise "With the Main Guard", "Drums of the Fore and Aft", "The Man Who Was", "The Courting of Dinah Shadd", "The Incarnation of Krishna Mulvaney", "The Taking of Lungtungpen", and "The Madness of Private Ortheris".This copy formerly belonged to John Laws CBE (1935-2025), the distinguished Australian broadcaster known as "Golden Tonsils", whose radio career spanned more than 70 years. His bookplate is on the front pastedown.
