TRUMP #1 (1957) Kurtzman Hugh Hefner Al Jaffee Post-MAD 1st Issue

$50 · Offered by eBay

NEWSAGENT'S DESCRIPTION This listing is for the first issue of Trump, No. 1 (January 1957), a short-lived but historically important satire and humor magazine edited by Harvey Kurtzman and published by Hugh Hefner’s HMH Publishing Co. Created immediately after Kurtzman’s departure from MAD, Trump gave him a lavish, glossy showcase for more sophisticated satire and brought together an exceptional group of cartoonists, including Will Elder, Jack Davis, Wally Wood, Al Jaffee, Arnold Roth, and Russ Heath, with Al Jaffee also serving as assistant editor. The issue includes Kurtzman and Elder’s “The Fastest Gun There Is,” Kurtzman and Jack Davis’s “Hunting,” and additional work by Al Jaffee, Arnold Roth, Wally Wood, and other major humor artists, along with parodies of contemporary popular culture. Harvey Kurtzman penciled and inked the illustrated cover. Trump survived for only two issues, January and March 1957. Although the magazine sold well, its lavish production was expensive, and Hefner canceled it while his publishing operation was facing financial pressures and reducing expenses. The project nevertheless occupies an important place between Kurtzman’s groundbreaking work at MAD and his subsequent humor magazines Humbug and Help!.
