Scarce 1999 Advance Reader’s Edition of Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern War by Mark Bowden, issued before publication by Atlantic Monthly Press/Grove Atlantic. This copy is personally inscribed: “Rick, Thanks for your continued service in law enforcement. Never forget! Jim Yacone Super 62” Captain James “Jim” Yacone served as co-pilot of MH-60 Black Hawk “Super 62” with the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment during the October 3, 1993 Battle of Mogadishu. Yacone and pilot Mike Goffena flew covering orbits over the crash sites and target area under intense enemy fire. Their helicopter was badly damaged, but they succeeded in bringing it back to a safe landing. Yacone received the Silver Star for his actions. The inscription was obtained personally by the seller while attending the FBI National Academy with Jim Yacone in 2002. Both were former Army aviators serving in law enforcement at the time—Yacone with the FBI Hostage Rescue Team and the seller as a police chief. The advance edition includes the publisher’s introductory letter and the rear-cover “Uncorrected Advance Proof” publication information. Copyright page states First Edition. This is not signed by author Mark Bowden. It is signed by an actual participant in the events chronicled in the book. Very good overall condition with light cover rubbing, scratches and minor edge wear. Binding is firm and pages are clean. Photographs show the actual book being offered.
