[GLOBE GORE OF THE EASTERN COASTLINE OF NORTH AND SOUTH AMERICA FROM NEWFOUNDLAND TO BRAZIL]. A scarce and beautifully rendered half globe gore from one of mapmaker and Franciscan friar Vincenzo Coronelli's celebrated 1688 terrestrial globes, this segment picturing the eastern coast of North and South America, including Newfoundland, Acadia, New York and New England, Virginia, Florida, the eastern Antilles including detailed renderings of Cuba, Hispaniola, and Bermuda, and the northeastern coastline of South America from Brazil to Venezuela. Other notable features include New Sweden along the Delaware River, sailing routes charted through the Atlantic, and a descriptive vignette of a pod of manatees. Coronelli's 1688 globes were based on a pair personally commissioned by Louis XIV for Versailles, and as such pro-French angle is pronounced—New England and New York are restricted to narrow strips along the coast, and the entire Atlantic is boldly labeled "Mare di Canada ó Mare della Nuova Francia." A rare and particularly attractive piece of 17th-century cartography; the present copy was acquired by H. Richard Dietrich II in 1978 and has remained in the Dietrich American Foundation since."The engraving and design throughout is of the highest standard....Coronelli seems to have sought to omit nothing that might be of interest to geographers, navigators and explorers. There are an usual number of legends, all explanatory and informative, but which never crowd the space available.
