A beautifully produced and complete set First deluxe Brock editions of the complete novels of Jane Austen, exquisitely illustrated with over 100 colour plates and in the publisher's vellum bindings. Charles Edmund Brock (1870-1938) and his brother Henry Matthew Brock (1875-1960) were the first to illustrate Austen's world with colour plates, producing an edition together in 1898. Almost a decade later, Dent commissioned Charles alone to produce fresh illustrations for their "Series of English Idylls", which introduced this deluxe vellum format. The Brocks prided themselves on the historical accuracy of their illustrations. They collected antique furniture and had their friends model clothing from the period in their Cambridge studio. Charles Brock was elected a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour in 1908. 6 works, octavo. With 144 colour plates (including tissue-guarded frontispieces and vignette title pages), all after C. E. Brock. Original vellum, spines and front covers lettered and elaborately decorated in gilt, illustrated endpapers, top edges gilt, others untrimmed. Bindings and decorations bright, light soiling and foxing mostly to rear covers, a little bowing, couple of superficial splits to inner hinges, occasional foxing to contents but generally clean.
