(Circa 1940) Description: Small colour cartoon leaflet. Text in traditional Chinese characters. 10 x 15.5cm. Faint vertical crease, though overall in very good condition. An insidiously light-hearted propaganda leaflet, presumably distributed by Imperial Japan or Chinese collaborationists amidst the Second Sino-Japanese War. Its intent appears to be to discredit the regime of Chiang Kai-shek by associating him with British (and by extension Western) imperialism and the century of humiliation. The cartoon portrays an ailing Chinese patient suffering from a swollen, Union Jack-emblazoned knee, attended by two enthusiastic Japanese medics. The text at right reads: "把援蔣的綑帶解開來看! 非把這百年大患的惡瘤割掉, 中國是不會再站起來的!", roughly translating to "Look! The fetters aiding Chiang must be broken! Unless the malignant tumor of this century-old great affliction is excised, China will not be able to stand up again!". When referring to this item please quote stockid 221598.
