Meiji 44 [ 1911] Description: Map, plan of the ship, fold-out chart, black and white photographic images throughout (between 1 and 3 images per plate) recording life aboard ship and places visited, 57pp, 26.5 x 19cm. Two personal letters with envelopes, a black and white photograph and eight film negatives in an envelope loosely inserted. Covers, in particular the upper cover, considerably damp damaged, with some staining to lower edge of leaves and endpapers, cord ties broken but the binding is still firm, covers worn at edges with a little loss. The contents are otherwise clean. 26 x 19cm. This rare photographic album commemorates a training cruise around the world undertaken by the Taisei Maru between October 1910 and August 1911. The Taisei Maru, a training ship of the National Merchant Marine School, embarked on its maiden voyage in 1904, and this 1910 cruise marked its sixth training mission and first circumnavigation of the globe, traveling through the southern hemisphere. The ship made stops in Tahiti, Stanley on the Falkland Islands, and Melbourne. During their stay
