Hesba Stretton was the nom de plume of Sarah Smith, who was the daugher of a bookseller. Smith wrote religious books for children. In Britain this title reportedly outsold ALICE IN WONDERLAND by a factor of 10 ! Smith was a co-founder of the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, and her accounts of working with slum children had comparable effect with her friend, Charles Dickens.
