This is a classic monograph devoted entirely to the Loriidae. Mivart provides detailed species accounts of roughly 75 forms known at the time, with careful attention to anatomy (especially the tongue structure adapted for extracting nectar), plumage, distribution, and habits. Sixteen species are illustrated and described here for the first time.  The work is known above all for its 61 full-page color plates by J. G. Keulemans—widely regarded as among the artist’s finest and most vibrant bird illustrations—plus four colored distribution maps and numerous anatomical text figures. The birds range primarily across the Australasian region (New Guinea and surrounding islands, Australia, the Philippines, and parts of the Pacific). Mivart emphasizes both their striking coloration and their suitability as pets, noting that some species readily approach human dwellings.
