'Captains Courageous'. First British edition of Kipling's only novel set entirely in America. "Kipling thought he'd written a great story. He wrote to Conland [Dr. James Conland, the dedicatee], after the book had begun to appear serially, 'I tell you that tale will be a snorter'" (Gidmark, p. 71).The work was originally serialized in Pearson's Magazine between 1896 and 1897, having been written while the newlywed Kipling was living in Vermont. The British edition was published one month after the American edition.This copy formerly belonged to John Laws CBE (1935-2025), the distinguished Australian broadcaster known as "Golden Tonsils", whose radio career spanned more than 70 years. His bookplate is on the half-title.
