Alice's Adventures in Wonderland; [together with] -- Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There. A uniformly bound set of early printings, comprising the 43rd thousand of Alice in Wonderland, and the 32nd thousand of Through the Looking-Glass. These copies belonged to the prominent civil engineer J. C. Hawkshaw (1841-1921). A childhood acquaintance of Charles Darwin, Hawkshaw later married Darwin's niece by marriage, Cicely Wedgwood of the pottery family.These masterpieces of fantasy literature earned Carroll "a place in the firmament of the great, for they are not only acts of imaginative genius but they also revolutionized writing for children" (ODNB). Alice in Wonderland was first published in 1866, and Through the Looking-Glass earlier in 1872.Hawkshaw's photogravure bookplate, illustrating his primary country estate, Hollycombe in Hampshire, is on the front pastedowns.
