Kinsey was a renowned American author, art historian, and prominent collector who, alongside his wife Miriam Kinsey, came to be regarded as the "parents of contemporary Netsuke". Through their extensive collecting starting in the 1960s and subsequent scholarly publications, the Kinseys are credited with reigniting Western appreciation for traditional and modern miniature Japanese art forms.
