First edition
The Home Instructor by Thomas W. Handford was published in 1886 by R. G. Badoux & Co. of Chicago, Philadelphia and Cincinnati. Described on the title page as “A Compendium of Useful Knowledge,” this illustrated Victorian-era volume offers practical guidance on a wide range of subjects relating to everyday life, including society, correspondence, conversation, business, health, education, music, books and reading, and other aspects of public and private life. The title page notes that the book was “Sold by Subscription Only.” This attractive hardcover is in very good condition for its age. The decorative green illustrated cover retains strong detail and clearly readable gilt-style lettering, with some scuffing and wear along the edges and corners. The interior is clean overall. A previous owner’s name and an 1896 date are handwritten on an early page, along with a later handwritten price. The pages show expected age toning, with a small spot on one of the end pages. The rear interior hinge remains intact. The front interior hinge has a small split but is not completely separated. The binding remains strong, and the pages turn easily and open well for reading. Please see photos for full condition details. Proceeds from the sale of this book benefit the Friends of the Library, Starkville, MS, supporting local library programs and services.
