Junji Ito’s Uzumaki is a haunting masterpiece of psychological horror, surreal imagery, and grotesque transformation—perfect for fans of manga that gets under your skin and stays there. The book is a soft cover which I recycle and transform into a limited edition, personalized hardback with leather cover, designed and made by me. First, I prepare the book by embedding cotton cords into the spine. Adding 2 mm wood boards to the front and back. And reinforcing everything with cloth. To make the cover I use grade A, naturally tanned hide, I buy from a tannery in north Spain. It is the same leather Louis Vuitton uses to make his bags, so it is top quality. I do all the processing of the leather myself. First, I design the cover, and what I did here I created an image that captures the manga’s haunting obsession with spirals, grotesque transformation, and body horror. Featuring twisted forms, a sinister snail, and the unmistakable spiral motif. Next, I mix leather inks and screen them on the surface of the leather. The inks are partly absorbed by the skin to create a permanent bond. Finally, I coat the leather with protective solution.
