The Seasons. A finely bound copy of the deluxe issue, featuring exquisite colour plates, much less common than the uncoloured issue. The plates are based on the landmark illustrated edition of 1797, engraved by F. Bartolozzi and P. W. Tomkins after paintings William Hamilton made specially for the poem. Originally published in 1730, Thomson's Seasons anticipated Romanticism and inspired generations of artists.Provenance: Claudius Edmund Delbos (1878-1949), landscape painter and etcher who settled in America and edited Poésies choisies de Alfred de Musset (1925), with his bookplate. On becoming headmaster of the Newman School in New Jersey, Delbos wrote to one former pupil, F. Scott Fitzgerald, informing him of the death of the former headmaster.
