The River War. A handsomely bound copy of Churchill's second book, his account of his experiences as a British Army officer during the Mahdist War (1881-1899) in the Sudan. First published in 1899, this is the fourth edition overall, and follows the revised text of the second edition of 1902.This edition includes a new introduction, in which Churchill explains that "a generation has grown up which knows little of why we are in Egypt and the Sudan, and what our work there has been" and hopes that "the story which these pages contain may be some help and encouragement to those young men and women who have still confidence in the destiny of Britain in the Orient".
