Aldine Edition of the British Poets. First editions of Pickering's Aldine series, celebrated both for the elegance of the typography and the diligence of its editors. This attractive set is suitably tooled with the dolphin and anchor device which Pickering appropriated from the Aldine press, paying homage to the beautifully produced work of the famous printer Aldus Manutius (c.1449-1515). The Aldine edition eventually ran to 53 volumes and was completed in 1844.Pickering's ambitious project brought him "more fame... than any other of his undertakings" (Keynes, p. 26). After his death in 1854, the rights of the Aldine Poets were acquired by Bell & Daldy, but Pickering's original issue is "a much more satisfactory possession than subsequent editions, which do not bear the same stamp of individuality" (Keynes, p. 22).
