The central narrative begins in Jerusalem with the prophet Lehi and his family. Lehi fortells the destruction of Jerusalem, is persecuted, and eventually flees the city with his family. They wander the desert for 8 years, eventually coming to a coastline where Lehi's son, Nephi, is instructed on how to build a ship. They then sail to the Americas. The book is separated into 15 parts or divisions. 1 Nephi, 2 Nephi, Jacob, Moroni Mormon, Alma, etc. The crowning moment in the book is Christ's personal ministry among the people after his death and resurrection. In 421 AD the last prophet, Moroni, the son of Mormon, buries the plates in a hill. This same Moroni later appears as a resurrected being to the young Joseph Smith. Joseph is instructed on how to find the plates, their purpose, etc. The Book of Mormon stands as a second witness for Christ and the holy scriptures.
