American Antiquities, and Discoveries in the West by Josiah Priest, published in Albany in 1833 by Hoffman and White. This is the Third Edition, Revised. An early 19th-century American work examining archaeological discoveries, ancient ruins, earthworks, and theories concerning the peoples who inhabited North America before European settlement. Priest compiled accounts from travels, historical sources, and antiquarian research in an attempt to explain the origins and history of ancient American civilizations. Of particular interest is the fold-out map/illustration depicting ancient works on the Muskingum near Marietta, Ohio, which remains present in this copy. Condition: This is a nearly 200-year-old book showing substantial age and wear. The original leather binding is heavily worn, rubbed, cracked, and deteriorated, with significant loss along the spine and edges. The spine label remains partially legible. The binding is fragile and shows separation/weakness, particularly around the hinges and spine. Pages exhibit considerable toning, foxing, staining, spotting, and other age-related discoloration. The endpapers contain extensive period and later handwriting, inscriptions, marks, and ink spots. The fold-out map shows toning, staining, creases/folds, and wear but is still present.
