Everest Kangshung Face. First edition, first impression, signed by eight members of the expedition. This is Venables' account of his ascension of Everest in 1988 as the first Briton to reach the summit without supplied oxygen. Stephen Venables, Paul Teare, Edward Webster and Robert Anderson set off to ascend Everest by a new route via the Kangshung Face from Tibet. The climbing team reached as far as the South Col when Teare descended due to worsening altitude sickness. Webster and Anderson retreated at the South Summit, leaving Venables alone to reach the summit at 3.40 PM. Venables feared falling in the dark on his descent and decided to camp alone overnight at 8,600 metres and reunite with his companions in the morning. This work is signed on the half-title by Venables and Anderson. The half-title is signed by Teare and Webster, in addition to Miriam Zieman, who served as the expedition's doctor, Tenzing Norbu, who organized the team's travel arrangements, and Joseph Blackburn and Miklos Pinther, who worked as the photographer and cartographer, respectively.
