The American Sportsman. Third edition, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper verso "Charles H. Ammidown Esq. with kindest regards of his friend E. J. Lewis February 14th 1874".Elisha Jarrett Lewis (1820 - 1877) was a doctor who enjoyed hunting and shooting. The American Sportsman served as a universal guide for shooters and included miscellaneous tips, such as how to prevent a gun from rusting and chapters on various birds and their habits and where to find them. Lewis enlisted the help of John Cassin and the Academy of Natural Sciences to ensure this work's engravings were anatomically accurate. Charles Hovey Ammidown (1887 - 1937) was a New York based solicitor involved in the Rittenhouse Woolen Company. This copy has a portrait photograph, potentially of the author, pasted opposite page ix.
