Pool. First edition, first printing, self-published in an unspecified but very small edition and consequently rare. Hirano's haunting photobook documents the disused swimming pools of California, Arizona, and Nevada - a playground for skateboarders. This edition predates that put out by the Tokyo publishing house Ritorumoa (Little More) in the same year - that printing located at just two institutional libraries, New York Public Library and Japan's National Diet Library.Hirano writes in his afterword: "No pools have the same shape as they were built to fit each backyard of the houses or its land features … Anthony's are good for grinding because its coping is big and makes it more stable. Baker's are a bit more challenging for their long vertical. No pools can beat Blue Heaven's for its total balance in shallow (shallow area of pool), surface, coping, and transition …Wheels have left their traces in the beautiful and sad landscape. Such a landscape surprisingly makes sense to me".
