Collection of 16 photographic albums and his typescript diary. An exceptional personal archive of approximately 3,300 original photographs assembled by Arthur Stannard Vernay, one of the most prominent naturalists and big-game hunters of the interwar period. Spanning Africa, the Middle East, India, and East Asia, the albums document major scientific expeditions undertaken largely for the American Museum of Natural History and constitute one of the most substantial visual records of early 20th-century field collecting.The core of the collection comprises the Vernay-Faunthorpe expeditions to India (1922-24), whose results underpinned the AMNH's South Asiatic Hall of mammal habitat dioramas, opened in 1930. These expeditions yielded more than 1,200 specimens and extensive photographic and film documentation. The images are consistently well composed and printed, reflecting Vernay's insistence on professional photographers, high-quality equipment, and a forensic, taxonomic approach to wildlife photography.Vernay (1877-1960), born in Dorset and self-made in New York as a leading antiques dealer, turned his considerable resources to natural history from the early 1920s. In partnership with Colonel J. C. Faunthorpe, an experienced Indian shikari, he undertook six expeditions across South and Southeast Asia.
