The Akeydat and Maualy tribes were chosen because they are excellent examples of the Ahl Shemal people of the north" (pp. 217-8).Shanklin's study is very much in the vein of old-style physical anthropology, evincing the European urge to quantify and classify the "other". Nevertheless, it was an attempt to fill the lacunae in Western knowledge of the Bedouin and sits within the broader framework of "the Tribal Question", a heightened interwar interest in the world's desert zones and nomadic peoples. At the time of publication, Shanklin was professor in the Department of Histology in the American University of Beirut's school of medicine. The Wistar Institute was established in 1892, it's aim being to sponsor and publish new medical research.Just three copies traced at institutional libraries: American University of Beirut, National Library of Israel, and Northwestern.
